A Rare Find: The Orion Ring This is an adapter — also referred to as a coupler — that allows Nikon S-mount lenses to be used on Leica screw mount bodies.
Distance scale is in feet, with a minimum focusing distance of 3.5 feet (1 meter).

This was the very first product developed by Akira Hagihara, who later founded Orion Seiki (which would become Miranda Camera), in collaboration with his university classmate Shintaro Otsuka, who was one year his junior.
The adapter was highly acclaimed at the time, but surviving examples are extremely scarce today — at one point, it was even considered a “phantom” accessory.

Following the success of this coupler, Orion went on to release other Leica-related products such as the compact mirror box Mirax, the 4-element, 4-group Supreme 100mm f/2.8 lens, and eventually the prototype Phenix.
These developments culminated in the release of Japan’s first 35mm SLR with a pentaprism — the Miranda T, marking the beginning of the Miranda camera legacy.

There are two marks near the outer edge around the mount face, but otherwise, the adapter shows minimal signs of use and remains in clean condition overall.

The helicoid operates exceptionally smoothly, and the interior has been carefully refinished with matte black lacquer to suppress internal reflections.

We performed test shots using our Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, and rangefinder coupling was spot-on across all distances.
Its build quality clearly explains why it was so well-regarded in its time.
If only someone would remake it just like this today — we’d be the first in line!
