※About rarity

The Leica M2-R, manufactured in 1969, is considered the civilian version of the Leica M2S (CAMERA STILL PICTURE KS15-4), which was produced for the U.S. Army in 1966. While based on the Leica M2, it incorporates the rapid loading mechanism from the M4.

The military order for the M2S was later canceled, and the M2-R was sold to the civilian market (within the United States only) by New York Leitz under the M2-R name. Manufactured between 1969 and 1970, the M2-R's production ran from serial number 1248201 to 1250200, with only around 2,000 units made.

The M2-R is the final model of the M2 series. In addition to the rapid loading mechanism, it also features a self-timer mechanism and other components that differ from the standard M2, such as the base and bottom plate. Since the M4 had already been introduced by this time, the M2-R exhibits subtle influences from the M4 in its parts and finish. This makes the M2-R a unique model, ideal for collectors.

On the right side of the camera, there is some slight wear on the strap lugs, and the bottom plate has a few minor scuffs. Otherwise, the body shows almost no signs of use and remains in excellent condition. The gutta-percha covering is original.

The camera was fully serviced in December 2024. All functions are working smoothly, and the viewfinder is crisp and clear, with good contrast in the double image.

This is a unique version of the M2, suitable for practical use as well! The package includes the original English manual for the M2-R, as well as the original case that accommodates the DR Summicron.
