Leica IIIb, serial number in the 280,000 range, manufactured in 1938.Leitz product code: ATOOH.
The Leica IIIb stands as one of Leitz’s pre-war masterpieces—marking the final iteration of the Barnack Leica with a stamped metal body.
Its successor, the Leica IIIc, shifted toward mass production with a die-cast body and a slightly longer chassis, but the more compact form of the IIIb offers a remarkably comfortable feel in the hand.
Compared to its predecessor, the Leica IIIa (Leica DIII with a 1/1000 top speed), the IIIb introduced several significant improvements.
Most notably, the rangefinder and viewfinder windows were positioned closer together for better usability.
Additionally, the diopter adjustment was integrated coaxially with the rewind knob.
Internal construction was also updated—most importantly, the rangefinder unit was now secured to the body frame with screws, enhancing durability against shocks.
Built during the prosperous pre-war years, the IIIb features exceptional finishing and precision craftsmanship, making it a favorite among connoisseurs.
For some reason, clean examples of the IIIb are quite rare, but this unit stands out with its excellent condition.
Even just admiring it reveals its outstanding build quality.
A worthy addition to any collection.
Apart from a few light scuff marks on the baseplate, the body is in excellent overall condition.
There are no noticeable scratches, dings, or dents, and the areas around the strap lugs are clean.
The shiny chrome finish retains a beautiful luster—making this a rare example of the Leica IIIb in such fine cosmetic condition.
Overhauled in April 2025, all operations have been finely tuned for smooth, responsive handling.
It delivers the signature Barnack experience, with a soft, refined shutter sound that adds to its charm.
The viewfinder is impressively clear, and the rangefinder patch offers strong contrast for precise focusing.
A camera that’s a pleasure to use—even just dry-firing the shutter brings joy.
