Leica MD-2. Leitz catalog number 10105.
Based on the Leica M4-2, this model was produced without a viewfinder or rangefinder, designed for use with Visoflex or microscope photography.
Production started in 1977 with serial number 1468723, and ended in 1985 with serial number 1664350. A relatively small number of MD-2 cameras were made, with a total production of just 2,593 units.
The serial number of this item is 1469xxx, making it a very early MD-2. The strap lugs on this early model are finished in black chrome, just like the Leica M4-2 from the same period. Shortly after, the strap lugs on the MD-2 were changed to stainless steel.
Starting with the Leica Standard, followed by models like the Ic, If, and Ig, and continuing into the M series, Leitz has consistently produced viewfinder-less models such as the MD and MDa. These were primarily made for special purposes like documentation, but today, they are often used with wide-angle lenses like the Super-Angulon 21mm or the Elmarit 28mm, paired with an external viewfinder, making them ideal for street photography. Weighing only 458g, the MD-2 is also lighter than other M models, which is a welcome feature.
This unit has been fully serviced and is in excellent condition. It’s perfect for both practical use and collection!
One of the black dots on the back door is missing on one side, but other than that, there are no signs of wear, and the exterior is in excellent condition. There is no fading on the black chrome parts, and the strap lugs show no signs of use either. The vulcanite is original from the time, giving it a smooth and comfortable grip.
Fully serviced in September 2024. The winding mechanism, shutter, and all other operations function smoothly.
The MD-2 lacks both a self-timer and a frame selector, making it perfect for a firm, secure grip during street photography.
This is a rare, early-model MD-2 in beautiful condition!
