※About rarity

The Leica Elmarit 28mm f/2.8, second generation, with serial number 2,460,000, was manufactured in 1970 and features a 6-group, 8-element optical design. The filter thread is E48, and it does not have a infinity lock.

Thanks to its retrofocus design, the lens protrudes less from the rear, making it compatible with cameras like the Leica M5 and CL. This design also eliminates the need for exposure compensation when used with bodies that have built-in exposure meters, enhancing its practicality.

The lens is particularly impressive when stopped down to f/4 to f/5.6, as it provides exceptional three-dimensionality in the center of the frame, making it a remarkable choice for sharp, clear shots with great depth.

The 12501 hood shows signs of use, including scratches, some gloss, and a small dent on the tip. The lens shows some paint loss on the focus knob, but the barrel remains free from noticeable scratches and is in good cosmetic condition.

In 2024, the lens underwent a full overhaul, including focus adjustment. The operation is still smooth, and the rangefinder coupling works perfectly.

The lens’ middle element shows slight coating wear when exposed to strong LED light, but this is barely noticeable and should not impact actual image quality.

At wide apertures, the lens offers a pleasant softness, and when combined with natural peripheral falloff, it creates a gentle, atmospheric rendering. It performs excellently whether wide open or stopped down, making it a versatile and impressive wide-angle lens. Test shots also yielded great results, and we invite you to check out the test gallery.

Included with the lens are the 12501 hood, an original Series 7 filter, and a third-party lens cap.
