Angénieux Zoom 45–90mm — Leica’s very first zoom lens, produced from 1968 to 1980. Originally introduced for the Leicaflex system. This particular example is in Leica R mount with 3 cams. Serial number is in the 1.27 million range, which is an Angénieux serial, not a Leitz number. Manufactured in 1969, this is one of the earlier Angénieux zooms.
The lens features a complex 12-group, 15-element optical design, with a constant bright aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range. Filter size is 67mm screw-in, or alternatively, Series 8 filters can be inserted between the lens and hood.
At any focal length, it delivers the signature Angénieux rendering—rich and painterly, almost like a prime lens. Especially at close distances, it offers a lush, wide-open character with soft flare and beautifully smooth bokeh. Even when stopped down, the lens retains a gentle softness—that unmistakable Angénieux touch.
Its sleek and straightforward design gives it a refined, handsome appearance that pairs beautifully with Leica SL series bodies.
Some slight glossiness can be seen on the painted surfaces from handling over time, but overall, the lens still retains a clean and attractive appearance.
Fully overhauled in March 2025. Many Angénieux zooms suffer from loose helicoid and zoom rings, but this one has been carefully serviced to deliver a smooth, damped feel. The aperture ring also operates with a silky smoothness. One characteristic of this particular copy is slight focus shift during zooming.
The glass shows minor coating wear typical of this lens model, but overall, it’s in exceptionally clean condition for an Angénieux zoom. Test shots produced very pleasing results.
Includes original lens hood, hood cap, and rear cap.
