Nickel Summar. Collapsible barrel version. This is the all-nickel barrel variant that followed the earliest fixed-barrel and the black-rim Summar.
Leitz product code: SUMUS. Serial number in the 210,000 range, manufactured in 1934. Distance scale in meters, a highly desirable feature. Features a straight helicoid and a hexagonal aperture. This particular unit was later coated by Leitz.
Optical design consists of 6 elements in 4 groups, based on the Double Gauss formula. Aperture markings follow the continental system (f/2, 2.2, 3.2, etc.).
At maximum aperture, it exhibits the characteristic peripheral softness of classic fast lenses, while delivering the rich bokeh typical of the Double Gauss design. Despite its compact and lightweight form, it still provides a bright f/2.0 maximum aperture, making it a very attractive lens.
Its vintage aesthetics perfectly complement period-correct Leica DII and DIII models, making it an excellent match for classic setups.
There are visible signs of use, including scuffs on the collapsible barrel, but for a Nickel Summar, the overall exterior condition is relatively good.
Fully overhauled in February 2025. The aperture and helicoid operate exceptionally smoothly, and the rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned.
Under strong LED light, only slight coating deterioration is visible. Unlike many examples of this lens, the front element has very few cleaning marks. The test shots also showed excellent results. Thanks to the coating, this Summar delivers a sharp, well-defined rendering.
