※About rarity

Summar 50mm f2, serial number in the 460,000 range, manufactured in 1938. It has a hexagonal aperture and is uncoated. The Leitz code is SUMUS. The aperture is labeled with continental markings (f2, 2.2, 3.2, etc.). The distance scale on the helicoid is in feet.

This lens, a typical standard lens for Leica, features a double-Gauss design with a rich bokeh and noticeable peripheral fall-off. At wide open aperture, it offers a soft and atmospheric rendering, and when stopped down, you can enjoy sharp details while maintaining the softness. It is somewhat prone to flare in backlighting, so using a larger hood, like the genuine SOOMP hood, will help produce more defined images.

The barrel shows slight rubbing marks, but considering that many Summar lenses are heavily used, this one is in remarkable condition with minimal signs of wear and a very clean appearance. There is no peeling of the chrome, which is often seen at the tip or base of the lens.

It underwent a full overhaul, including focusing adjustment, in February 2025. Thanks to the careful servicing, both the aperture and helicoid are very smooth, providing a stress-free user experience. The rangefinder coupling and focus are both in good condition. The interior of the lens barrel, where the anti-reflection matte lacquer was carefully re-applied, helps to ensure more defined rendering.

The glass has a single fine hairline on the edge of the middle element and slight aging marks on the front and rear elements, but the lens remains remarkably clear and sharp, typical of the Summar. The glass's clarity certainly contributes to its excellent performance, as demonstrated by the very positive real-world test results. It captures images beautifully.
