2nd generation Summicron 50mm f2. Serial number in the 2,330,000 range, manufactured in 1969. Redesigned that same year with a 5-group, 6-element construction, commonly known as the “6-element” version. From this 2nd model onward, the minimum focusing distance was improved to 0.7m. Leitz product code: 11817.
Although often overshadowed by the first-generation Summicron, this lens offers excellent image quality, and the removal of the infinity lock has improved handling. With a lightweight metal barrel, it weighs only about 200g, making it very practical to carry. An excellent lens for everyday use.
Recommended for those looking for a 2nd Summicron in good condition. Comes with the 12585 lens hood and hood cap.
There are some scuffs around the filter thread from attaching and removing the hood, as well as minor paint loss on the knurled part of the helicoid edges, but otherwise, the lens maintains a very clean appearance with little sign of use. The included 12585 hood is also in excellent condition.
Fully overhauled in 2024. Thanks to meticulous servicing, the aperture ring and helicoid provide a smooth operation with the perfect amount of torque. The rangefinder coupling is excellent, and the lens achieves sharp focus at all distances, from close-up to infinity.
There is a thin 4mm long balsam separation on the edge of the middle element, but it has no impact on actual image performance. Otherwise, the glass is clear and free from noticeable scratches or haze, offering bright, crisp image quality.
Once commonly found in many camera shops, the 50mm Summicron second-generation 6-element version has become quite rare in good condition in recent years. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience its exceptional handling!
