Dual Range Summicron 50mm f2 The final version of the Close-Focusing Summicron, with a serial number in the 2,350,000 range, manufactured in 1969. Leitz's product code for this lens is 11918, with the old code being SOOIC-MN. The helicoid features distance markings in both meters and feet.
Without the goggles, the minimum focusing distance is 1 meter. When the goggles are attached, close focusing is extended to approximately 0.5 meters, with parallax automatically corrected. The outstanding precision craftsmanship and superb operational feel, hallmarks of Leitz's golden era, never fail to impress.
This particular piece was part of a batch manufactured for the Leica M2-R. The serial numbers on the lens head and helicoid match, reflecting its originality.
Please note that this lens cannot be mounted on most digital Leica M bodies due to interference between the lens rangefinder cam and the camera body. However, it works without issues on the current M11 series.
When using live view or mirrorless cameras, close focusing is possible even without the goggles, although it requires a bit of technique. Feel free to ask for more details if needed!
There are some slight scuffs on the base of the barrel, but no noticeable scratches or dings, making for a very clean appearance. The matte chrome plating retains its smooth, refined texture.
In December 2024, the lens underwent a full overhaul. The helicoid operates smoothly from close focus to infinity, and the aperture ring has a satisfying click feel. Focusing is precise, and the rangefinder coupling works perfectly.
The front element shows minimal coating deterioration, but there are no cleaning marks, scratches, or haze, leaving the glass in excellent condition. The close-focus goggles are also in great shape.
In practical testing with our M11, the lens demonstrated the remarkable performance that is quintessentially DR, delivering outstanding image quality.
