Collapsible Summicron 50mm f2. Leica screw mount. Leitz product code: SOOIC. Serial number in the 1,160,000 range. Manufactured in 1954, the inaugural year of the Leica M3. The helicoid features a feet scale.
The Summicron, Leitz's quintessential fast lens, followed the Summar and Summitar as the third-generation high-speed standard lens. Its unparalleled resolving power caused a sensation in the photographic industry at the time, playing a pivotal role in ushering in Leitz's golden era alongside the launch of the Leica M3.
While the collapsible Summicron was produced in significant numbers, many examples have suffered from cleaning marks or internal element deterioration, resulting in optical damage. Lenses that retain their original image quality are becoming increasingly rare. This particular lens is in relatively good optical condition, allowing for a true appreciation of its legendary performance.
The barrel is in exceptional condition, showing virtually no signs of use. There are no dents, and even light scuffs are almost entirely absent, including on the mount surface.
The lens underwent a full overhaul in November 2024, which included focus adjustment. Both the aperture ring and helicoid operate smoothly and pleasantly, providing an excellent tactile experience. The rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned, and the focus is spot-on.
The optics show a very faint haze on one side of an internal element that could not be entirely removed during servicing. However, it is unlikely to affect actual shooting. Other than that, there are no cleaning marks or fungus scars. For a collapsible Summicron—many of which are plagued with scratches, haze, and severe wear—this lens offers an outstanding optical condition. The coating remains intact across all surfaces.
The results of practical testing were excellent. Please refer to the gallery for sample images.
