※About rarity

Early version of the 2nd-generation Summicron 50mm f2, with serial number in the 2.26 million range, manufactured in 1968. It’s a transitional model, featuring the newly designed 5-group, 6-element optical formula in the barrel of the 1st generation. This unique configuration is only found in this serial number range, and has recently been referred to as the Transitional Model internationally. The Leitz product code, 11817, is the same as the standard 2nd-generation 6-element version that followed.

From the Leica Model A to the early M3, Summicron, Summilux 35mm & 50mm, Noctilux f1.2, and more recently the APO-Summicron 50mm, Leica's early models have always been crafted with incredible attention to detail, creating an impact in terms of quality, design, and performance. This early 6-element version clearly reflects that same commitment from Leitz.

It retains the refined design of the later 1st-generation models, and its elegant aesthetics pair perfectly with both black chrome and black paint cameras. Historically, this transitional model has been renowned for its exceptional image quality, and this particular unit lives up to that reputation. It delivers stunning image performance and is a rare find.

This lens was recently used by a customer and shows almost no signs of wear, with a beautiful appearance that is close to mint condition. It underwent a full overhaul at our shop in 2023, and the operation is incredibly smooth across all functions. The rangefinder coupling is spot-on, and it delivers impressively sharp images.

Under magnification, you may notice a few extremely light cleaning marks, but there are no visible scratches or haze, and the glass is as clean as the exterior suggests.

This early 2nd-generation Summicron has consistently left a strong impression with every unit we’ve handled, and this one is no exception. It produced wonderfully sharp results, and the rangefinder coupling performed flawlessly, allowing you to shoot confidently from the minimum focusing distance of 0.7m. The test results were excellent, and you can check them in our sample gallery. All example images were taken wide open, showcasing the lens's sharpness, rich colors, and overall joy of use.

It comes with the original black-rimmed UVa filter, front cap, plastic case, and a box (though the serial numbers do not match).
