Tele-Elmarit 90mm f2.8, early version. Chrome finish. The Leitz catalog number is 11800, and the serial number is in the 2 million range, indicating it was manufactured in 1963. This lens features a 5-group, 5-element design from Canadian Leitz.
This particular lens is a somewhat rare early version with a chrome barrel. It has a compactness reminiscent of the early Summilux 50mm f1.4, making it a pleasant medium telephoto lens.
At wide open, it offers a moderate softness in rendering, while stopping down transforms the image into one with very high contrast and rich tones. The beautifully textured satin chrome barrel, characteristic of Leitz's peak period, fits perfectly with the chrome Leica M bodies. The filter diameter is 39mm screw-in (E39), and the compatible hood is either IUFOO or 12575.
The lens shows almost no signs of use and has a beautifully new appearance. This is a lens that allows you to enjoy the quality of Leitz from the past.
It underwent a full overhaul in September 2024. The operation of the aperture and helicoid is as smooth as ever, and the rangefinder coupling works perfectly, allowing for sharp focus even wide open.
There is a very slight trace of fungus about 2-3mm in diameter at the edge of the rear element, but given the overall excellent condition of the glass, this is quite a disappointing point. However, it has been thoroughly cleaned, so there’s no risk of progression.
Additionally, there are no signs of fogging or cleaning marks, resulting in beautifully clear glass.
The lens comes with its original front cap, a plastic case, and a matching box with the serial number.
