8-Element Summicron with goggles. A legendary Leica lens version for the Leica M3. Serial number: 1,780,000 series, made in 1960. Manufactured in Wetzlar, Germany.
For this lot, the correct filter ring material is aluminum. The rest of the lens features a high-quality chrome finish typical of this era, with the goggles section adorned in a beautiful crinkle paint finish. The minimum focusing distance is 0.65 meters, offering a 5 cm advantage over the version for the M2.
Equipped with special goggles, this lens converts the Leica M3’s 50mm frame to 35mm while maintaining the accuracy of the rangefinder—a truly intricate design that reflects the dedication of Leitz’s engineers. When mounted on an M3, it exudes a militaristic appearance, with a ruggedness that’s absolutely irresistible. It’s a masterpiece that captures the hearts of German industrial product enthusiasts.
As for the image quality, it’s been discussed extensively. The slightly soft rendering at full aperture creates a very pleasing atmosphere. Depending on the aperture setting, the lens can draw out a sense of resolution and depth, showcasing its versatility. Our store staff has tested this lens numerous times, and each time, we are amazed by its remarkable performance.
The item shows very minimal signs of use. The crinkle finish on the goggles section is free of wear or shine, and the rich, matte black surface is truly eye-catching. There is a very slight scuff on the front end of the barrel from attaching and detaching the lens hood, and a small scratch on the outer edge of the chrome-plated frame around the round window of the goggles. However, it remains a remarkably clean 8-element Summicron.
The previous owner had the lens overhauled by a professional service. All parts function correctly, with smooth operation throughout.
The glass on both the lens and goggles is also very clear, with no haze or noticeable cleaning marks. The results from our test shots were excellent.
It comes with original front and rear caps.
