Summicron 35mm f2, 8-element version. Serial number in the 2,040,000 range, manufactured in 1964. Leitz product code SAWOM, later changed to 11308. Made in Germany. The minimum focusing distance is 0.7m.
In addition to its remarkable image quality, this lens features the functional beauty characteristic of Leitz products at their peak, along with a stunning chrome finish. When mounted on a Leica M2, it exudes an air of elegance. The rendering is soft and gentle when wide open, and as you stop down, it gains a strong sense of three-dimensionality, eventually transitioning to a sharper, more defined image.
Though there are some minor signs of wear on the glass, the overall image quality remains excellent.
There are two or three small marks on the aluminum frame at the front of the lens barrel. While there are slight signs of use, such as light scuffs throughout, there are no noticeable scratches or dings, and the overall appearance is quite clean.
The lens underwent a full overhaul, including focus adjustment, in September 2024. Thanks to thorough maintenance, the aperture ring moves smoothly with a satisfying click, and the helicoid operates smoothly, providing a stress-free user experience. There are repair marks on the bayonet part of the mount from a previous service, but it attaches to the body without issue. Rangefinder coupling is accurate, and focusing is spot-on.
The front element shows some coating deterioration and small spots from fungus, along with a few cleaning marks. However, the test shots produced excellent results, which can be seen in the sample images provided. This Summicron 8-element version offers superb performance and is in a condition that invites worry-free, regular use.
