It is the third generation Summicron 50mm f2, known as Summicron-M, adopting the modern naming convention. Manufactured by Leitz Canada, it carries the Leica product code 11819 with a serial number of 2,980,000, indicating it was made in 1979. Designed by Walter Mandler, it shifted from a 5-group 6-element to a 4-group 6-element configuration.
This particular lens is an early version of the Summicron 3rd generation, notable for its protruding distance adjustment knob, sometimes referred to overseas as the "Tiger Claw." Despite its f/2 large aperture, it weighs only 197g and features a compact design. The minimum focusing distance is 0.7m. It enhances color balance and contrast reproduction, highlighting its ease of use.
Included accessories are the 12538 hood, UVa filter, hood cap, and a soft case.
There is minor paint loss on the hood attachment part at the front of the lens barrel, but there are no noticeable scratches or marks, and overall it has a clean appearance. The UVa filter shows normal signs of use.
It underwent a full overhaul in June 2024. The aperture and helicoid operation have been adjusted to a moderate torque feel. Unlike typical issues with the Summicron 3rd generation, it operates smoothly without any rattling in the aperture mechanism. Detailed focus adjustments were made, ensuring precise rangefinder coupling.
There are 2-3 very faint wipe marks on the front element, but no haze or other issues, presenting clear and clean glass throughout. The coatings on all lens surfaces are also intact.
It comes with all accessories and is a perfectly tuned Summicron 3rd generation.
