Leica M5 Black Chrome. 1.37 million units. Manufactured in 1973/1974. Late model with 3 strap lugs. Product code is 10502.
It features a highly visible light meter integrated into the viewfinder. The shutter speed dial is positioned where the right index finger naturally reaches, allowing for speed adjustments while checking the exposure without taking your eye off the viewfinder.
It's an extremely user-friendly and wonderfully designed model. Although it has a larger body compared to the Leica M4, it excels in handling. It has always been loved by enthusiasts as a Leica M model favored by professionals.
Additionally, the M5 Black matches well not only with the black lenses of that era but also with the classic chrome-plated lenses like the Summicron and Summilux.
However, the mercury battery (MR-9) for the Leica M5 is no longer manufactured, making it difficult to obtain in recent years. As a substitute, we used to use the VARTA V625U / LR9 from Germany, but at some point, it no longer fit well in the battery compartment, causing issues such as the cover not screwing in properly or the screw barely catching.
Currently, an adapter that allows the use of SR43 batteries in the M5 is sold by Kanto Camera, so it would be best to use that.
It has been fairly well-used, with small scratches and scuffs in various places, and the black chrome has slightly faded to a steel color. This gives it a rugged and stylish appearance.
Overhauled in June 2024. The operation of each part has been smoothed out. The light meter works properly, and the view through the finder is clear.
This Leica M5 Black, which is in its prime for use, is ideal for those who want to enjoy shooting extensively without being discouraged by the high cost of film.
