The legendary Nikkor-P.C 8.5cm f2, final version with a black barrel. Nikon S-mount, external bayonet.
The Nikkor 85mm debuted in 1948 with a chrome-plated silver barrel. It features a Sonnar-type design with 3 groups and 5 elements, a 48mm filter thread, and a distance scale marked in feet.
At maximum aperture, the lens produces a slightly soft rendering with rich gradation and excellent contrast. Stopping down to around f4 reduces vignetting, resulting in a uniform image with heightened contrast and sharpness.
This iconic lens gained fame when D.D. Duncan used it during the Korean War, praising its performance and helping to establish the reputation of Japanese lenses worldwide.
The later black-barrel version is relatively rare. Its design pairs beautifully with both silver and black camera bodies, and it can also be enjoyed on modern mirrorless digital cameras via an adapter.
The chrome-plated section at the front shows a few marks from attaching and removing the hood, but the rest of the barrel is in excellent condition with almost no signs of use.
Fully overhauled in December 2024, the lens has been meticulously serviced, resulting in exceptionally smooth operation of the aperture and helicoid. Rangefinder coupling and focus accuracy have been verified using a Nikon S body.
The front element shows three faint cleaning marks, and there is a small balsam separation at the edge of the middle element, but neither is likely to affect image quality. Overall, the glass is clear and clean with excellent transparency.
The lens performed exceptionally well in practical testing. Please refer to the sample images on our website.
