※About rarity

Elcan 2-inch f2, manufactured by Ernst Leitz Canada, is an entirely different lens from the famous Elcan 50mm used for the KE-7A. This lens features a 5-group, 7-element design, while the Elcan for the KE-7A has a 4-group, 4-element Elmar-type configuration. Designed by Walter Mandler, the same engineer behind the legendary lenses like the Summicron, Summilux, and Noctilux, this lens boasts impressive optical pedigree.

Although not confirmed, it is believed that around 500 units of the Elcan 2-inch were produced for the U.S. Navy for use on naval ships to capture infinity focus images, rather than for enlarging purposes.

This particular lens has been modified for Leica M-mount rangefinder coupling. While the rangefinder does not function at closer distances, the lens can focus as close as 50cm. The lens is known for its high resolution at the focus plane and its distinctive bokeh, delivering unique and excellent image quality. It is an outstanding lens with remarkable rendering.

This Elcan 2-inch f2 lens is in excellent condition with minimal signs of use. The lens head is nearly pristine, and the custom-machined aluminum helicoid is also in great shape.

The mechanical operation is smooth and precise, with the aperture click feeling notably firm, which is characteristic of military lenses and adds a controlled tactile experience. The helicoid moves smoothly, and the rangefinder coupling is perfect. Although the rangefinder image slightly overshoots infinity, the lens focuses sharply when adjusted correctly.

The lens shows two tiny, pin-sized balsam separation spots in the second group, but this does not impact real-world shooting performance. The glass is otherwise free of scratches, haze, or any other issues, maintaining excellent clarity.

Test shots have yielded exceptional results, with impressive resolution, high sharpness, and contrast. The bokeh is also pleasing. For reference, test images have been shared at the trial gallery. Aside from close-up shooting, these were taken with a Leica M Typ 240, utilizing the rangefinder for focus.

This lens comes with its original shipping tags and other documentation, making it a rare find for collectors and photographers alike.
