The renowned Sonnar 85mm f2 was produced by Carl Zeiss Jena post-war. This particular lens, with a serial number in the 3.1 million range, was manufactured in 1947. It features an aluminum barrel version with metric distance markings. Its optical design consists of 6 elements in 3 groups, and it is equipped with T-coating. The minimum focusing distance is 1.2m, and it weighs 388g (measured). The filter thread size is 49mm.
The aluminum barrel makes this model lighter, yet it remains a fast, large-aperture, medium-telephoto lens filled with substantial glass elements. Renowned as an excellent portrait lens, it offers rich tonal gradation and exquisite rendering that elegantly isolates the subject in focus.
There are minor scuffs and small scratches from use, but the aluminum barrel shows minimal corrosion, maintaining a very good overall condition.
The lens underwent a full overhaul (OH) in December 2024. The helicoid, which tends to stiffen over time, now operates with exceptional smoothness.
The glass is in excellent condition, with no noticeable cleaning marks or haze, allowing you to fully enjoy the signature rendering of the Sonnar 85mm f2.
The lens comes with its original front and rear caps. The rear cap is made of aluminum and is an Opton-branded cap.
