※About rarity

Contaflex, commonly known as Daruma, is a twin-lens reflex camera equipped with a 35mm focal-plane shutter, introduced in 1935 by Zeiss Ikon as a statement of its prestige. The solid die-cast body made of lightweight alloy gives it a distinctly heavy and robust feel, weighing in at 1459 grams, making it a heavyweight in the camera world.

At the time of its release, the price was an astonishing 2,200 yen—over five times the price of a Leica DII and more than thirty times the initial salary of a university graduate. Such a steep price, often described as equivalent to the cost of a house, speaks to the camera's luxury status during its time.

The camera features a vertical-running metal shutter with speeds ranging from 1/2 to 1/1000 seconds, inherited from the Contax I. It utilizes a proprietary bayonet mount for its lenses, offering options such as the Tessar f2.8 and the Sonnar available in f2 and f1.5 for the standard 50mm lens. Additional lenses include the Biogon and Orthometar in 35mm, as well as Sonnar and Triotar in 85mm and 135mm, respectively. Collecting all these lenses would be an exciting challenge, though the Orthometar is particularly elusive!

The focusing screen accommodates the 50mm lens across the entire surface, while the frames are set for 85mm and 135mm. When using the 35mm lens, an extremely rare external finder attachment is required, adding to the Contaflex’s unique charm and collectibility.

The bottom cover shows noticeable wear and scratches, typical for a camera nearly 90 years old. Other signs of use include additional wear and some paint loss, but overall, the exterior condition is quite good considering its age.

The Albada finder has typical aging effects on the coated surface, making the 85mm and 135mm frames somewhat difficult to see. However, the shutter, winding mechanism, and helicoid all function normally.

The exposure meter is operational, but its accuracy is questionable. Since it's generally unreliable, it would be advisable to use a standalone exposure meter for accurate readings. The finder provides good visibility, making it easy to gauge focus.

The Sonnar 5cm f2 lens has minor cleaning marks and some glass yellowing on the front element, but it's in reasonable condition when considering its manufacturing date.

The camera also comes with the original leather case, enhancing its collectibility and value.
