Second-generation Summilux 35mm f1.4, with Leica product code 11870, serial number 2,870,000. Manufactured in Canada in 1977. This lens, produced for over 30 years, is one of Leica's iconic large-aperture wide-angle lenses, following the Steel Rim version from 1960. It features a black chrome finish.
The lens offers a soft, dreamy rendering at wide open apertures, and when stopped down, it delivers sharp, clean lines with a gentle atmospheric feel. It produces finer lines and a more delicate rendering compared to the Summicron. The design also beautifully complements the slim bodies of rangefinder cameras. This lens is a classic and quintessential large-aperture wide-angle lens from Leica.
This particular set is in excellent condition and comes complete with its original box.
The lens shows only slight wear on the distance adjustment knob of the helicoid, while the overall appearance remains exceptionally clean with minimal signs of use. Even the aperture control ring, which typically shows paint wear, shows no noticeable signs of use.
The lens underwent a full overhaul in November 2023. The aperture, which often has a "clicking" sound, and the helicoid, which tends to feel stiff in many second-generation Summilux lenses, are both functioning smoothly and precisely after thorough servicing.
For the rangefinder coupling, at f1.4, there is a slight front-focus tendency at the peak of focus, but the resolution is still excellent. By around f2.8, the lens reaches perfect focus, yielding sharp and precise results.
In addition to its beautiful appearance, the lens glass is exceptionally clean with no scratches or haze, providing clear, sharp rendering. The coating is still well-preserved.
The set includes the original box with matching serial numbers, the original warranty card, a nearly unused 12504 lens hood, a Series 7 UVa filter, and both front and rear caps. This set is also an excellent choice for collectors!
