※About rarity

The Elmar 50mm f2.8 is an early model designed for the Leica M mount, with a serial number indicating it was manufactured in 1960. This lens features a retractable design and has a distance scale marked in feet, with the Leitz product code being 11112. The filter diameter is E39.

Originally, the Elmar 50mm f3.5, which consists of 4 elemnts in 3 groups design, was standard on the Leica A model back in the 1920s. Over the years, it has evolved with the introduction of new glass types, resulting in a brighter f2.8 maximum aperture.

Notably, this lens is characterized by its somewhat soft and gentle rendering when shot wide open, a quality that many photographers appreciate. However, it's should mentioning that this particular lens is sometimes referred to as a "cloudy lens." While it does exhibit some minor coating wear, the glass remains in fairly clean condition.
Additionally, it is compatible with several hoods, including ITOOY, IROOA, ITDOO, and 12585.

The Elmar 50mm f2.8 presents a generally clean appearance, with only minor wear noticeable on the retractable section and the base's textured chrome finish. Recently, in October 2024, this lens underwent a full overhaul, resulting in smooth operation of both the aperture and helicoid. The rangefinder coupling is functioning perfectly, ensuring precise focusing.

While the rear element shows slight wear in its coating, this is unlikely to affect image quality. Yet, the glass is still clear! It allows for a delightful shooting experience, showcasing the lens's inherent optical performance.
The original front cap is included with the lens, adding to its appeal for collectors and users alike.
