Elmar 50mm f2.8, Leica M mount. Early version, with serial number in the 1.49 million range, manufactured in 1957. Collapsible barrel design. Distance scale marked in feet. Leitz product code: 11112. Takes E39 filters.
The Elmar 50mm f3.5, which had been produced for many years since the 1920s with a 3-group, 4-element design, was brightened to f2.8 with the adoption of new glass types. Known for its soft and gentle rendering when shot wide open, this lens has a distinct character.
Compatible hoods include ITOOY, IROOA, ITDOO, and 12585.
There are scuffs and small scratches on the mount surface and the collapsible barrel from use. In August 2024, it underwent a full overhaul, including focus adjustment. The aperture ring and helicoid now operate very smoothly, and the rangefinder coupling is spot-on, with focus performing well.
The glass shows small scratches on the rear element and coating deterioration on various surfaces, particularly on the inner side of the front element. The Elmar 50mm f2.8 is known for its tendency to fog, but compared to other examples, this one is in relatively good condition.
The results from practical shooting tests were positive. Sample images are available in the gallery. Even under strong sunlight without a hood, it delivered excellent image quality. This Elmar 50mm f2.8 is a lens you can use without hesitation, handling any situation with ease.
