OCSUC / 11871. Early version Summilux 35mm f1.4 from the 1,760,000 serial number range, made in 1960.
This lens, now commonly referred to as the Steel Rim, is an early version of the Summilux 35mm f1.4. It comes with goggles for use with the Leica M3.
Not only is the lens known for its distinctive image rendering, but the finish on the barrel is also beautiful, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship typical of Leitz during its golden era. The minimum focusing distance is 65 cm, and the filter size is E41. The appropriate hood for this lens is either the OLLUX or 12522H.
The goggles, which convert the 50mm frame to 35mm, offer a bright and clear view typical of Leitz quality, as long as there is no haze.
This lens is prone to flare and ghosting when shot wide open, but stopping down by just half a stop can greatly reduce these effects. The true joy of using this lens lies in mastering its unique characteristics and refining your images accordingly. It looks incredibly stylish when paired with the OLLUX hood.
It comes with a custom front cap for the Steel Rim, provided by Flashback Camera, model FB-05.
Beautiful appearance. All functions are working properly, and the rangefinder coupling is also in excellent condition.
The exterior is very clean, with no noticeable scratches or scuffs. While relatively clean examples of the Steel Rim with goggles still exist, finding one in such pristine condition has become increasingly rare in recent years.
In 2023, the goggles were fully disassembled and underwent a complete overhaul, including focus adjustments. The aperture and helicoid operate very smoothly, and the rangefinder coupling has been carefully calibrated to ensure perfect alignment from close focus to infinity.
The glass in both the lens and goggles is clear, with no haze, providing a bright and sharp view. The results from our test shots were also excellent.
With its beautiful exterior, flawless glass, and outstanding image quality, this Steel Rim is a rare find in such exceptional condition!
