The Macro-Switar 50mm f1.8 is a standard lens for Alpa cameras, produced by Switzerland's Kern company, a manufacturer specialized in cine lenses, making it one of the few photographic lenses they created. It features a 5-group, 7-element construction with apochromatic correction and is marked in feet. This renowned lens, which greatly enhanced the appeal of Alpa cameras, delivers exceptional image quality across a wide range of scenarios. In particular, its creamy, melting bokeh in close-up photography is remarkable.
With the recent rise of mirrorless digital cameras, the lens has become even more practical to use. Leica rangefinder-coupled adapters for the Macro-Switar are also available in the market, offering the possibility to pair it with an M-mount Leica for added enjoyment. However, as the coupling accuracy of these adapters can vary significantly, it's advisable to check them carefully before use.
There is some paint loss on the black-painted area of the aperture ring. Other than that, signs of use are minimal, and both the silver and black paint are in excellent condition. In August 2024, it underwent a full overhaul. The feel of the aperture and helicoid has been tuned to provide a pleasant, balanced torque, making it a joy to operate. Extending the helicoid for macro photography becomes particularly enjoyable.
There are 3 to 4 very faint cleaning marks on the front element, as well as slight wear to the coating, but no fogging or noticeable scratches are present. The glass condition is clear and sharp. It comes as a delightful set with the original front and rear caps and hood included.
