Summicron 50mm f2 1st generation, late fixed-mount version. Leica M-mount. Leitz code is SOSIC, later 11818. Manufactured in 1965 with a serial number in the 2,110,000 range. Dual scale in meters and feet.
Unique Leitz design with a 6-group, 7-element configuration. It retains the same optical formula as the earlier version, but the helicoid knurling design has been updated, giving it a more modern look.
The timeless and universally beautiful design exudes a classic lens atmosphere, while still perfectly complementing modern digital Leica M cameras or mirrorless systems.
For a matching hood from the same era, the IROOA would be appropriate, but the earlier ITDOO also pairs well. The lens's rendering quality is, needless to say, outstanding. It delivers high contrast and stable performance even at maximum aperture, making it a beloved choice even today. Comes with original front and rear caps.
There is a slight scuff mark beneath the f5.6 marking on the aperture ring, but otherwise, the barrel shows minimal signs of use, and the chrome finish retains its beautiful shine.
The lens underwent a complete overhaul in August 2024. Thanks to meticulous servicing, the aperture ring now clicks smoothly, and the helicoid moves effortlessly, providing a satisfying tactile experience. The rangefinder coupling works perfectly, and focusing is accurate.
There are 2-3 very faint cleaning marks on the front and rear elements, along with a few tiny pinpoint coating marks, but neither has any noticeable effect on image quality. Otherwise, the glass is exceptionally clear, with no haze and a bright, transparent appearance. The coatings are well-preserved across all surfaces.
As pristine examples become increasingly rare, this lens offers both excellent performance and aesthetic appeal. The test shots came out beautifully, and I encourage you to check the sample images.
