OCLUX / 11870. Summilux 35mm f1.4 1st, commonly known as the Steel Rim. Manufactured in 1960 by Leitz Canada, with a serial number of 1.76 million.
Its rendering near wide-open aperture exhibits a beautifully dreamy and ethereal quality, akin to veiled mystique, while stopping down yields sharp and crisp images with a distinct cutting edge. The sense of dimensionality when slightly stopped down is also remarkable.
While every generation of Summilux lenses has its charm, the 1st model stands out in terms of style and construction. Its appearance with the dedicated OLLUX hood is undeniably cool. In recent years, this lens has become quite expensive, and it's easy to see why.
This particular specimen is flawless in both appearance and optical performance, truly a rare find.
In 2021, a full service was performed on this lens. Thanks to meticulous maintenance, the aperture and helicoid operation remain incredibly smooth to this day. The aperture blades are also pristine. The seamless feeling when the infinity stop engages is truly remarkable. The rangefinder coupling works flawlessly.
The lens exhibits no wiping marks, haze, or aperture blades cutting off light, delivering a clear and stunning image. Finding a Steel Rim lens with glass in such impeccable condition is extremely rare.
The test results were also excellent.
Included with this lens are a custom-made front cap for the early version of the Summilux 35/1.4 and a rare genuine E41 UVa filter. Although the UVa filter's frame protrudes slightly, it doesn't pose any practical issues.
This lens offers the exceptional craftsmanship of the first-generation Summilux and its uniquely characterful rendering. It's a rare find in such immaculate condition!
