※About rarity
Ofuner 5cm f1.9 lens, manufactured by Ofuna Optical. Designed for the Miranda camera system with a dedicated 44mm screw mount. It features a 4-group 7-element configuration, adopting a modified double Gauss design. The minimum focusing distance is approximately 1.5 feet (about 45cm). The external appearance and lens construction closely resemble the Miranda-specific Zunow 5cm f1.9 lens. Aside from slight differences in the shape of the base's roulette, everything else, including the font of the barrel markings, remains identical. This lens has 10 aperture blades, distinguishing it from later models like the Miranda T-specific Zunow 50mm f1.9, which has 12 blades. This lens is mentioned in the renowned work on old lens research, "The Ultimate Guide to 35mm Vintage Lenses (2): Diagnosis of Old Lenses 50mm f1.9 and 50mm f1.5"(Japanese book). It's the exact model featured in the book. The lens design is attributed to Kenji Kunimoto, a former employee of Nippon Kogaku (Nikon), recognized for his work on improving the design of the Pinpon Zunow lens (Flat type) at Teikoku Kogaku. This lens is a highly rare find. The helicoid ring shows several deeper scratches, indicating general signs of use throughout. However, no significant dents or dings are present. In 2024, the lens underwent professional servicing, ensuring smooth operation of all components. The front element exhibits wiping marks and slight whitening of the coating. While there may be some impact under strong backlight conditions, practical shooting tests yielded satisfactory results. The presence of sweet flare in wide-open rendering might make the effect less noticeable. Sample images have been featured in a photography exhibition, showcasing the lens's characteristic soft rendering near wide open. As you stop down, similar to the Zunow f1.1, the lens undergoes a dramatic transformation, delivering sharp imagery that may even evoke thoughts of it being a different lens altogether. Color rendition also improves. The original front cap shows signs of wear. While the rangefinder coupling is non-functional, an adapter for conversion to Leica M mount is included. Enjoy using it with live view or mirrorless cameras.
