Leica IIIa. Serial Number 330,000 Series, Manufactured in 1939. A Barnack Leica from the sheet metal era. Leitz Code: AGNOO. This particular unit has a large tripod screw.
The IIIa, which added a 1/1000th second shutter speed to the DIII, was reportedly widely used for sports photography at the time. While black-painted bodies dominated before the DIII, the Leica IIIa marked the shift towards chrome finishes as the mainstream.
It retains practical features like strap lugs, diopter adjustment, and slow shutter speeds introduced with the Leica DIII, making it an attractive model as a functional Barnack Leica.
When paired with compact lenses like the collapsible Elmar or Elmar 35mm, it’s a great size to slip into a pocket. The feel in the hand is distinct from the die-cast models that followed, such as the IIIc, offering a more comfortable grip.
The subdued chrome finish gives this Leica IIIa a refined and elegant appearance. While there are minor scuffs around the accessory shoe, the back of the top cover, and the bottom plate from use, this IIIa is quite clean, especially considering how heavily used many examples of this model typically are. There are no dents or deep scratches.
All parts, including the vulcanite covering, are original from the time of manufacture. It was overhauled in July 2024, resulting in smooth operation across all functions. The viewfinder is exceptionally clear, and the rangefinder's double image shows crisp contrast.
This is an affordable and well-preserved piece that allows you to fully enjoy a pre-war Leica.
