Leica M3, early model. Serial number 701xxx, manufactured in 1954, the first year of M3 production. This original body retains many of the characteristic features of the early M3. The tripod screw is the large type.
The camera includes several early M3 traits: no screw at the 12 o'clock position of the mount, the ASA 200 back door, the distinctive early-style back door interior, a glass pressure plate, the chrome semi-moon stopper on the accessory shoe, and the minus marking at the center of the rewind axis. These details make it a must-have for M3 enthusiasts, some of which overlap with the early M3 models.
Like the early Leica A-type, the M3 underwent various changes in a short period, making it a fascinating subject of exploration. This Leica is not only practical but also an engaging, in-depth model that becomes more enjoyable the more you learn about it.
The top cover, strap lugs, bottom plate, and shutter dial show signs of use, but overall, the camera is in good condition for an early M3. There are no significant dents or dings.
The camera underwent a full overhaul in November 2024. The shutter sound is crisp, and the film advance mechanism operates smoothly. Unfortunately, there is some residual fog on the prism inside the viewfinder that could not be fully removed during the servicing. This results in a slight reduction in contrast, but it does not affect its usability, and the camera can be used without any issues.
This early M3, thoroughly serviced and in good working order, is now available at a service-friendly price.
