Dual-Range Summicron 50mm f2. Late model of the close-up Summicron. Serial number in the 2.18 million range, made in 1966. The Leitz product code is 11918, and the old code was SOOIC-MN. The helicoid distance scale includes both meter and feet markings.
The lens alone focuses as close as 1 meter, and with the attached close-up lens, it can focus down to around 0.5 meters, while simultaneously correcting parallax. With its exceptional build quality and the remarkable operation feel that is characteristic of Leitz products from their heyday, it always leaves me in awe.
This lens satisfies the desire for a bit closer focus on an M-type Leica, offering a delightful mechanism for switching and a precise, finely crafted design that fills the ownership experience with joy.
Please note that on digital Leica M cameras, the lens’s rangefinder cam interferes with the body, preventing installation. However, it works perfectly with the current M11 series.
For live view or mirrorless cameras, close-up photography is possible even without the close-up lens, though it may require a bit of technique. Feel free to ask for tips!
There are signs of wear and slight gloss from use, particularly on the rear surface of the close-up lens, which shows more noticeable abrasion. Otherwise, there are no significant scratches or dents. The lens is in a very practical condition for use.
In April 2025, the entire lens, including the close-up lens, underwent a full overhaul. The operation feel of the aperture and helicoid has been completely transformed, offering a smooth and pleasant tactile experience.
There is slight coating wear on the glass, only noticeable under strong LED light, but it has no impact on actual performance. The glass is clean and clear, providing sharp and vivid images. In practical tests, the lens delivered the beautiful rendering typical of the DR model.
