Leica Ig, serial number in the 980,000 range, manufactured in 1960. The code name is OCEGO. This model, which started production in 1957, is the final Barnack Leica, derived from the Leica IIIg, but without the rangefinder and viewfinder. It is also the first Leica to have the Leica logo engraved on the front of the body. Perhaps they filled the gap left by the missing viewfinder with this logo.
Originally manufactured for copying and scientific photography, it features two accessory shoes on the top plate, allowing for customization with rangefinders or standalone viewfinders to suit your preferences. You can enjoy Leica's design and functional beauty, with no compromises made even in their accessories.
Incidentally, the serial number of this unit is 987525. The Leica Ig started with serial number 887001 in 1957 and production initially ended in 1960 at 987525. Therefore, this Leica Ig is the very last unit of the early batch! It is worth noting that the Ig was reproduced in a very limited run of just 10 units from serial numbers 987591 to 987600 in 1963.
There are slight scuffs and small scratches on the top plate that are only visible under certain lighting conditions, but there are no noticeable dents or significant damage, making it a very clean body overall. The bottom cover shows hardly any scuffs.
Overhauled in July 2024. The feel of each part is excellent, and the shutter operates smoothly. Before the overhaul, the vulcanite had deteriorated significantly, so we reluctantly replaced it entirely. Although it is not fully original, it still retains much of its vintage charm.
Enjoy creating your own Leica by attaching your favorite lenses and accessories to this beautiful Leica Ig. Due to the non-original vulcanite, we have set a reasonable price. This is the last unit of the rare early batch of the Ig. Perfect for practical use.
