Leica IIIc Grey. Serial number in the 380,000 range, made in 1942. A rare model produced in small numbers during World War II.
Examples supplied to the German military can be found with markings such as Luftwaffen-Eigentum, Heer, or W.H., while this particular camera is said to be the civilian version of the military Grey IIIc. The paint is, of course, entirely original.
Its distinctive bluish-grey paint gives the camera a particularly sharp and distinctive appearance, complemented by chrome-plated fittings and controls. The bulb setting on the shutter speed dial, traditionally marked Z since the Leica Model A, had by this period changed to B.
Paired with a period-correct Summitar, Elmar, or similar lens, it would make a wonderfully atmospheric set.
A rare piece.
This camera was originally sold by us and has now returned to our shop after being carefully used by its previous owner. Remarkably, this will be the fourth time we have offered this very camera for sale!
It remains in the same good condition as when we sold it previously. Brass is exposed in various areas, giving the camera a wonderfully aged and characterful appearance. There is a minor dent near the serial number on the top cover.
Many Leica IIIc Grey cameras have cracks in the rear gutta-percha covering, and this example is no exception. There is a vertical crack in the center of the rear covering. It has already been repaired, so it is unlikely to spread any further.
The previous owner continued to use the camera regularly until recently, and all functions are working smoothly. The finder and rangefinder are both clear and bright.
An excellent camera to enjoy in actual use while also making an attractive addition to a collection. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a Barnack Leica with a distinctive character.
