Carl Zeiss Jena Topogon 25mm f4 for Contax rangefinder cameras. Manufactured around 1950.
Based on the meniscus lens design of the Hypergon, the Topogon features a symmetrical optical construction of 4 elements in 4 groups. T-coated. Although it is not rangefinder-coupled, it is an enjoyable lens for scale focusing, especially when stopped down. The distance scale is marked in meters, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.9m.
Designed by Dr. Richter, who previously worked at Goerz, this ultra-wide-angle lens was originally developed for aerial photography. Its small glass elements have extremely strong curvatures, making production exceptionally difficult. Only around 1,000 examples were produced. This particular lens is from an early production batch.
As expected, the depth of field is exceptionally deep. Even wide open at f4, everything from 2m to infinity is in focus. At or near wide open, the lens produces soft, delicate images with gentle tones and atmospheric corner falloff, giving photographs a wonderful vintage character.
Please note that this lens cannot be mounted on certain camera bodies or adapters. Feel free to contact us for compatibility details.
Included are a Contax RF to Leica M adapter and a Leica M to SL adapter with a close-focusing helicoid. By combining these two adapters, you can enjoy the distinctive rendering of the Topogon on a Leica SL camera.
A rare find.
Previously sold by our store, this lens has been carefully used by its owner and has returned to us in the same good condition as when we last sold it.
The lightweight aluminum barrel shows some typical aluminum corrosion, and there is a minor dent at the rear edge of the lens. Nevertheless, the overall appearance remains quite clean. Both the aperture ring and helicoid operate smoothly, and everything functions properly.
The glass has a few light cleaning marks and some minor coating deterioration, but these should have no noticeable effect on image quality.
Please note that this lens cannot be mounted on Leica M cameras, even with the included adapter, as the rear of the lens interferes with the camera's rangefinder roller. We recommend using it on a mirrorless camera.
Actual shooting tests produced excellent results. The soft, dreamy rendering toward the edges creates a wonderfully distinctive atmosphere. As the aperture is stopped down, the rendering becomes more controlled and balanced. A delightful ultra-wide-angle lens to explore!
Comes with a Kenko filter, Rayqual Contax RF to Leica M adapter, Gabale Leica M to Leica SL adapter, and third-party lens cap.
