Summaron 28mm f5.6, commonly known as the Red Scale Summaron. One stop faster than its predecessor, the Hektor 28mm f6.3. Serial number in the 1,500,000 range, manufactured in 1957. Leitz product code SNOOX. Feet distance scale. Gauss-type optical design with 6 elements in 4 groups.
Introduced in 1955 as the successor to the Hektor 28mm f6.3, the Summaron remained in production until 1963. Like the Hektor 28mm, it uses an A36 clamp-on filter.
This lens was produced during the golden age of postwar Leitz, when the Leica M3, MP, and M2 were introduced. It remains highly popular today, not only for its excellent optical performance but also for the beautiful quality of its chrome plating and its timeless design, which still looks remarkably modern after nearly 70 years.
It also looks particularly stylish with the dedicated SOOBK rectangular hood attached, showcasing the elegant, refined design characteristic of Leica products from this era.
The unexpected introduction of a modern reissue attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, the original Summaron was produced in relatively limited numbers, and well-preserved examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
There are some minor scratches on the barrel and name ring, but no dents or other damage. Overall, the lens is in quite nice cosmetic condition.
Fully overhauled in October 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture ring has pleasant click stops, while the helicoid offers just the right amount of torque. All mechanisms operate very smoothly. Rangefinder coupling and focus accuracy are spot-on at wide open.
The front and rear elements show a fair number of shallow cleaning marks, but even under challenging shooting conditions, our tests revealed no noticeable effect on the images. Considering that the Red Scale Summaron is known for its tendency to develop haze, the glass is in reasonably good condition, with no noticeable veiling flare even when shooting against the light.
Test shooting also produced good results. Sample images are available in our Test Shoot Gallery. We hope you will take a look!
Comes with a genuine Leitz front cap and a third-party rear cap.
