※About rarity

Leica M3. A late-production single-stroke model. Its serial number is in the 1,000,000 range, and this particular camera was shipped in September 1960. The Leitz product code is IGEMO.

Introduced in 1954, the Leica M3 was the camera that ushered in the golden age of Leitz, featuring the Leica M mount, which ensured quick lens changes and secure attachment; a remarkably clear viewfinder with a built-in rangefinder and automatic parallax correction; a design that represents the perfection of functional beauty; a robust body that ensures stable operation; and a level of craftsmanship and quality of finish that competitors could not match.

The late-production M3 addressed the minor weaknesses of the early models and adopted the more conventional single-stroke film advance mechanism. For those using a 50mm lens, the reason the M3 is still considered the best model is undoubtedly the unparalleled excellence of its viewfinder.

Beginning with the Leica M3, the series evolved through the MP, M2, M4, M5, M4-2, M4-P, M6, M7, M8, M9, M10, and M11. Yet the appearance that makes a Leica M instantly recognizable has remained, and all the essential elements of the Leica M series are embodied in this original Leica M3.

There is one very faint scratch near the tripod socket on the bottom plate. A small spot of raised black paint is visible on the lower part of the back door, but otherwise the exterior is in exceptionally beautiful condition with no signs of use. The beauty of the top cover is particularly noteworthy. There are no signs of use around the strap lugs either. The vulcanite covering is entirely original, with its grain pattern still well-defined and a smooth, dry feel in the hand.

Overhauled in October 2026. Although the camera had recently been overhauled under the previous owner, it was not performing quite as it should, so another overhaul was carried out.

All controls now operate smoothly. The viewfinder is exceptionally clear, and the rangefinder patch has good contrast.

Comes with the genuine body cap and a leather case designed to accommodate the DR Summicron.
