The Summicron 50mm f2, one of Leitz’s most iconic high-speed standard lenses. This example is the second version, finished in black chrome. The Leitz product code is 11817. Serial number in the 2,450,000 range, dating from 1970. Made in Germany.
The second-generation Summicron was introduced in 1969 with a 6 elements in 5 groups optical design. From this version onward, the minimum focusing distance was reduced to 0.7m.
Although it tends to be overshadowed by the first-generation Summicron, the 2nd version is an excellent performer in its own right. Handling was also improved by eliminating the infinity lock. The lightweight alloy barrel keeps the weight down to around 200g as measured, making it an especially practical lens for everyday use.
Recommended for anyone looking for a clean example of the 2nd-version Summicron.
This lens was previously sold by our shop and has now returned to us after being carefully used by its previous owner. It remains in the same fine condition as when we last sold it. This will be the fourth time we have offered this particular lens.
Apart from very light rubbing around the outer edge of the filter rim from attaching and removing the hood, there are few signs of use and the exterior remains very clean. The included 12585 hood is also in nice condition.
A full overhaul was carried out in 2024. The aperture ring, which can often feel loose on this 6-element Summicron, is smooth and nicely damped. The helicoid is also exceptionally smooth, making focusing effortless and pleasant. Rangefinder coupling is excellent from close focus all the way to infinity, with accurate focus throughout the range.
There is a very faint cleaning mark at the center of the rear element and slight haze around the edge of an inner element, but these should have virtually no effect on actual images. There are no noticeable scratches, and the central area of the glass is clear and bright.
The 6-element Summicron was once a common sight in camera shops, but good examples have become increasingly difficult to find in recent years. A nice opportunity to acquire one in fine condition.
A 12585 lens hood and hood cap are included.
