The Nikon S4, a rangefinder camera manufactured by Nippon Kogaku. It comes with the compact, lightweight, and excellent-performing Nikkor-H 50mm f2 lens. This is a Japanese domestic-market set.
A particularly nice feature of this example is that the serial numbers of both the body and lens match those on the original boxes. A complete Nikon S4 set with matching numbers and accessories is quite difficult to find.
The Nikon S4 was introduced in 1959 as a more affordable model with simplified features based on the Nikon S3. To keep the price down, the 35mm frame was omitted from the finder, leaving only 50mm and 105mm frame lines. The self-timer was also removed, the frame counter was changed to a manually set type, and compatibility with the motor drive was omitted.
Unfortunately, despite being intended as a popular-priced model, the S4 never became widely adopted. Only 5,898 units were sold, less than half the production of the S3.
Even so, the camera itself clearly inherits the excellent qualities of the Nikon S series. With the 35mm frame removed, the finder is actually easier to view, while the omission of the self-timer gives the body a cleaner appearance and improves handling. It is a very pleasant and practical camera to use.
The highly reliable shutter performance inherited from the Nikon SP and S3 remains fully intact, making this a camera you can confidently use and enjoy for serious shooting.

There are some light scuffs and slight shine on the corners of the front apron, top cover, and base plate, but overall this is a clean and well-preserved example. Many Nikon S4 bodies have seen fairly heavy use, so this one is in quite nice condition. Perhaps this is simply the fate of an affordable model, much like the Leica M2.
All functions are working properly. Film advance is smooth, and the shutter runs lightly and crisply. The finder is also clear and easy to view.
The glass of the Nikkor 50mm f2 is clear and bright, with no haze. There are also no noticeable cleaning marks. You should be able to enjoy the lens performance as originally intended.
Included are the original outer boxes for both the body and lens, with serial numbers matching the camera and lens. Also included are the inner boxes, Japanese instruction manual, owner registration card with the registration section removed, Nikkor Club membership application form, original price tag showing a period price of 50,500 yen with lens, front cap, and a clean lens hood bearing the Nippon Kogaku logo.
A wonderful set for the collector.
