Summilux 50mm f1.4, second version in black chrome finish. Leitz product code 11114. Serial number in the 2,340,000 range, manufactured in 1969 during the Leica M4 era.
The second-generation Summilux, introduced in 1961, featured a redesigned optical formula and barrel, replacing the first-generation model with its elegant chrome barrel, affectionately known as the Noble Lady. Early examples of the second version also had chrome-plated barrels, but the black chrome version, introduced in 1966, brought a significant change in appearance. The knurling design was revised, and the lens became slightly lighter. This particular example weighs 289g. The optical construction remained unchanged at 7 elements in 5 groups.
The second-generation Summilux offers sharper rendering at and near maximum aperture. While retaining the distinctive character of the Summilux, it is highly regarded for its more consistent and well-balanced optical performance. The character of the bokeh changes with shooting distance, making this a lens that never grows tiresome.
An excellent choice not only for Leica M cameras but also for digital mirrorless cameras, where the beautiful images seen through the viewfinder are a pleasure in themselves. A versatile and highly regarded classic lens.
A very clean example overall. There is only a tiny amount of paint loss on the front edge of the lens from attaching and removing the hood. Otherwise, there are no noticeable scuffs, scratches, or dents.
Fully overhauled in 2026. Thanks to meticulous servicing, all controls operate with remarkable smoothness. Rangefinder coupling is accurate, and focusing performance is excellent.
There is some very slight coating deterioration on an internal lens element, but it is only visible under strong LED light and is unlikely to affect image quality. Test shooting results were also good.
Comes with a 12586 hood, hood cap, third-party filter, and genuine Leica rear cap.
A clean, attractive example, well suited for regular use.
