Summicron 35mm f2 with chrome barrel, commonly known as the 8-element Summicron. Made in Germany. This example is the type with an aluminum filter rim. Serial number in the 2.09 million range, made in 1965. Leitz product code: SAWOM, later changed to 11308. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7 meters. Filter size is E39.
Its soft rendering around wide open is particularly distinctive. Stop down slightly and the image gains a strong sense of depth and dimensionality. Stop down further and it becomes noticeably sharper while still retaining a gentle character. An excellent lens with a remarkably wide range of expression.
Beyond its superb optical performance, the lens is also highly appealing for its functional beauty and distinctly German industrial design. The popularity of the 8-element Summicron has continued to grow in recent years, while clean examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Original lens hoods such as the ITDOO and IROOA are compatible. Later hoods including the 12585 and 12504 can also be used.
The exterior is exceptionally clean, with only the slightest signs of use around the front edge of the filter rim. There are no noticeable scratches or other significant marks. Its condition allows you to fully appreciate the superb build quality of Leitz during its postwar golden era.
A full overhaul was carried out in 2026. Both the aperture ring and helicoid operate very smoothly, and the infinity lock slips into place with an equally refined feel. Rangefinder coupling is spot on.
There is slight coating deterioration on the front and rear elements, along with two or three extremely light cleaning marks on the front element and a single cleaning mark on the rear element. None of these should have any noticeable effect on actual images.
The results of our test shooting were very good. Wide open, it delivers the refined softness characteristic of the 8-element Summicron. As the lens is stopped down slightly, contrast and dimensionality increase dramatically. It is also a definite plus that the original coating remains on all lens surfaces.
Included are a period-correct original Leitz UVa filter, front cap, and rear cap.
