Leica M4 Black Paint, made in Germany. Serial number in the 1.28 million range, shipped in February 1971. The Leitz product code is 10402.
The Leica M4 was developed as the successor to both the Leica M3 and M2, combining the roles of the two cameras while further refining their design.
Features include the crank-style rewind mechanism still used on modern film Leicas, bright-line frames for 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, and 135mm lenses, and a quick-loading system that eliminates the need for a removable take-up spool. In terms of functionality, the M4 represents a highly refined design.
It was widely favored by professional photographers, including photojournalists from the world-renowned Magnum Photos cooperative.
With its more modern styling, the M4 also pairs beautifully not only with black lenses but with chrome lenses as well, making it an exceptionally versatile Leica in terms of appearance.
This item was previously sold by our shop and has now returned to us after being carefully used by its owner. It remains in the same good, fully original condition as when we last sold it.
There is a minor linear ding above the serial number on the top cover. In other areas frequently touched by the fingers, some of the black paint has worn away, with the brass underneath just beginning to show through. The gutta-percha is also completely original and remains in good condition. It is an ideal example to use without hesitation.
A full overhaul was carried out by a specialist in 2026. The shutter, film advance and rewind mechanisms, and finder were all thoroughly serviced, resulting in excellent operation and a clear, pleasant viewing experience.
Even after our six-month warranty period has expired, we continue to accept paid servicing for items purchased from our shop. Please enjoy using it with confidence.
An original period-correct black plastic body cap is included.
