Elmarit 28mm f2.8, the popular 2nd version with stopper. This is the early type of the second-generation Elmarit. Serial number in the 2,310,000 range, dating to 1969.
The optical design was revised from the 9 elements of the first version to 8 elements in 6 groups. The adoption of a retrofocus design reduced the protrusion of the rear element, making the lens compatible with the Leica M5 and CL. It also eliminated the need for exposure compensation when used with cameras equipped with built-in light meters, greatly improving its practicality.
On Leica M4-P and later models, the 28mm framelines are displayed in the viewfinder.
The lens delivers excellent results even at full aperture, but its rendering is particularly impressive when stopped down slightly to f4–f5.6, producing a wonderful sense of depth and three-dimensionality in the central area of the image.
The compatible filter size is E48. Alternatively, Series 7 filters can be used together with the 12501 hood.
This early version with stopper is a somewhat rare and highly sought-after model, often specifically requested by collectors and enthusiasts.
There are minor scuffs and small scratches on the front edge of the lens barrel, along with some paint loss around the edges, but none are particularly noticeable from a normal viewing distance. Otherwise, there are no significant scratches, and the lens remains in quite beautiful condition.
A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was completed in November 2026. Thanks to meticulous servicing, both the aperture mechanism and helicoid now operate exceptionally smoothly. Even the feel of the infinity stop engaging has been carefully tuned to provide a smooth, refined touch. The rangefinder coupling is spot-on, and focusing accuracy is excellent.
The front element has a few extremely faint cleaning marks, and one of the internal elements shows some coating deterioration, but neither is expected to affect actual photographs.
Actual shooting tests also produced excellent results. The high contrast and resolution, combined with the gentle falloff and softness toward the edges, create a wonderfully atmospheric rendering.
Comes with the original 12501 hood, rear cap, and a third-party Series 7 filter.
