※About rarity

The Leica KE-7A, officially designated CAMERA STILL PICTURE KE-7A, was manufactured for the U.S. military. Serial number in the 129xxxx range, made in 1972. While civilian versions of the KE-7A also exist, this is the military version actually supplied to the U.S. armed forces.

The KE-7A was ordered by the U.S. military from Leitz Canada in Midland. Based on the black chrome Leica M4, it differs slightly from the standard M4, with some modified components and sealing applied to various parts.

According to the accompanying technical manual, the operating temperature range is -20°C to 50°C, while the storage temperature range is -72°C to 70°C.

The Elcan 50mm f2 resembles the six-element Summicron in appearance but features a unique four-element, four-group Ernostar-type optical design. Wide open, it produces gentle images with a subtle, soft flare. Although resolution falls off toward the edges, the lens offers a wonderfully dramatic rendering. Despite its military origins, it delivers remarkably gentle and beautiful images.

All components remain original. An excellent addition to any collection.

There are light scuffs on the top cover around the Leica logo, a minor dent on the corner beside the film counter, and some handling marks on other parts. Nevertheless, the camera retains the rugged and purposeful appearance of a military Leica. The Elcan lens and its dedicated hood show little signs of use and are in beautiful cosmetic condition.

The gutta-percha covering is entirely original, with its texture still well preserved, providing a pleasant, dry grip.

Fully overhauled in October 2026. The lens was also carefully adjusted for focus accuracy. The film advance, shutter, and all other mechanisms operate smoothly.

The Elcan lens shows very slight coating deterioration, but no noticeable cleaning marks or haze. The glass is clear and bright. Test shooting also produced excellent results.

Comes with the dedicated KE-7A lens hood and KE-7A technical manual. The included manual is not a reproduction but a rare original copy issued on July 12, 1972.
