Summicron 35mm f2 with chrome barrel, commonly known as the 8-element Summicron. Made in Germany. This example has an aluminum filter ring. Serial number in the 2,040,000 range, manufactured in 1964. Leitz product code SAWOM, later 11308. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7m. E39 filter size.
The lens produces a soft, gentle rendering near wide open. Stopping down slightly brings a noticeable increase in three-dimensionality, while stopping down further produces much sharper images without losing its characteristic softness. An excellent lens offering a wide range of photographic expression.
Beyond its wonderful optical performance, the lens is also admired for its beautifully functional design, typical of fine German engineering. The 8-element Summicron remains highly popular, and well-preserved examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Compatible original Leitz lens hoods include the ITDOO and IROOA. Later hoods such as the 12585 and 12504 can also be used.
There are some scuffs and small scratches around the base of the barrel and on the edges of the infinity lock, but the lens retains a clean overall appearance. No dents or dings. A nice, clean example in good working condition.
Fully overhauled in October 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture and helicoid rings operate smoothly with just the right amount of resistance. Rangefinder coupling is also accurate.
There are a couple of tiny spots of coating deterioration on the front element, but these should have virtually no effect on actual images. Otherwise, there are no noticeable cleaning marks or haze, and the glass is clear and bright.
Actual shooting tests also produced good results. You can enjoy the lens's refined, gently soft rendering at or near wide open.
Comes with a UVa filter and third-party front and rear caps.
