The legendary Thambar 90mm f/2.2, one of Leitz's most celebrated lenses. Leitz product code TOODY. Introduced in 1935. This particular example has a serial number in the 310,000 range and was manufactured in 1936. Optical construction consists of 4 elements in 3 groups. E48 filter size. Distance scale marked in feet.
The Thambar was the only soft-focus lens ever produced by Leitz. In recent years, Leica unexpectedly reintroduced this legendary lens, creating quite a sensation among enthusiasts.
For soft-focus portrait photography, attach the dedicated filter and use the aperture markings engraved in red. For conventional photography without the filter, use the aperture markings engraved in white.
There are some light scuffs here and there, but no noticeable scratches or dents. For a Thambar, this example is in quite attractive cosmetic condition, retaining all of its original paintwork. The hood shows somewhat more signs of use, with a little brass showing through.
A complete overhaul, including focus adjustment, was carried out in November 2026. Thanks to meticulous servicing, both the aperture ring and focusing helicoid now operate exceptionally smoothly. The rangefinder coupling has also been precisely adjusted and works perfectly. The matte black anti-reflection lacquer inside the lens barrel has been carefully reapplied, which should help produce images with improved contrast and definition.
The front and rear glass elements show some extremely faint cleaning marks and slight age-related discoloration, but these should have no noticeable effect on actual photographs.

All were taken with the special filter attached, at maximum aperture, using the rangefinder for focusing. With its perfectly accurate rangefinder coupling, this lens is a real pleasure to shoot with.
