Later version of the Elmar 50mm f2.8, with both feet and meter distance scales. The Leitz product code is 11112. Serial number in the 1.93 million range, made in 1962. E39 filter size. Compatible hoods include the ITOOY, IROOA, ITDOO, and 12585.
Its design looks remarkably modern for a lens made around 60 years ago. With its refined styling and practical construction, it also looks perfectly at home on a current digital Leica. Produced during the golden age of postwar Leitz, the quality of its construction and finish is equally impressive.
The Elmar f2.8 has an appealingly gentle and slightly soft rendering around wide open. Stopped down a little, it becomes crisp and sharp while still retaining a certain softness, producing images with plenty of atmosphere. What was once sometimes regarded as slightly soft performance near wide open now feels especially attractive in the modern era.

There is a very minor scratch on the aperture ring and some light rubbing on the collapsible barrel, but overall the lens shows little sign of use and remains in very clean condition.
Both the aperture ring and helicoid operate smoothly. Focus is accurate, and rangefinder coupling is also spot on.
The inner elements show only extremely slight coating deterioration that is barely visible even under a strong LED light, and this should have virtually no effect on image quality. Many Elmar 50mm f2.8 lenses suffer from haze that has penetrated the newer optical glass and cannot be fully removed, but this example is unusually clean. The original coating also remains intact on all surfaces. Results from our test shooting were excellent.
