Elmarit 28mm f2.8, the popular early 2nd version with infinity lock. This is the early type of the second-generation Elmarit, featuring an 8-element design in 6 groups. Serial number in the 2.45 million range, made in 1970.

This example belongs to the second production batch of the 2nd version, which can be a little confusing. Shortly afterward, the infinity lock was omitted, resulting in the standard Elmarit 28mm 2nd version. Made by Leitz Canada. Leica product code: 11801R.

Thanks to its retrofocus optical design, the rear element protrudes much less than on the first version, allowing the lens to be used with the Leica M5 and CL.

It also eliminates the need for exposure compensation when used on Leica bodies with built-in light meters, making it a very practical lens. When stopped down slightly to around f4 to f5.6, it delivers particularly impressive dimensional rendering in the center of the image.

Compatible with E48 filters. Series 7 filters can also be used together with the 12501 lens hood.

The paint around the front end of the barrel has faded to a brownish tone. There are also various rub marks and areas of paint loss throughout. This lens appears to have seen considerable use over the years.

A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was carried out in September 2026. All controls now operate smoothly. Even the feel of the infinity lock clicking gently into place has been carefully tuned. Rangefinder coupling is spot on, and focus is accurate.

The front element has a few light cleaning marks, while some deterioration and roughness of the coating can be seen on the inner elements. Neither should have any noticeable effect on actual images.

The high contrast and resolution, together with the gentle falloff and softness toward the edges, create a wonderfully distinctive rendering. This early version with infinity lock is a somewhat scarce and popular model, often specifically sought after by enthusiasts.

Included are a 12501 lens hood, E48 UVa filter, third-party hood cap, and original Leica rear cap. The E48 filter has a few cleaning marks. The filter has a chrome rim, but this is completely hidden once the hood is attached.

Well used but fully serviced and complete with useful accessories, this is a practical example ready to be taken straight out and enjoyed.
