Hasselblad SWC/M in exceptionally rare, near-mint condition.
The SWC was purpose-built to fully exploit the legendary Biogon, a distortion-free ultra-wide-angle lens. When asking which came first, the lens or the camera, in the case of the SWC the answer is clearly the lens.
The SWC/M was an improved version of the previous SWC. Changes included a raised viewfinder mount, the addition of a winding crank, and a quick-release shoe, or tripod mount, positioned even lower on the body. These modifications were intended to accommodate Polaroid film backs. As Hasselblad cameras were widely used by professional photographers, this provides an interesting glimpse into just how important instant Polaroid photography was on professional shoots. A Polaroid Back 100 is included with this camera. Please note that Type 100 film has been discontinued.
The body was made in 1980, while the magazine dates from 1989. The SWC/M was introduced in 1980, making this an example from the very first year of production. According to published references, SWC/M production began with serial number 142112, which makes this camera the 365th example produced. SWC/M cameras fitted with the C lens were produced in relatively small numbers, reportedly only around 2,000 units.
The SWC series was produced in small quantities, and it appears that Hasselblad assigned an exceptionally skilled dedicated technician to assemble them, remarkably, essentially just one person. The work involved mounting the Biogon lenses supplied by Zeiss into the body shell and assembling the internal components.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the SWC and SWC/M were reportedly assembled almost entirely by one highly skilled female technician named Florence. There is therefore a good chance that this very camera was also built by her remarkably capable hands.

A superb set that had been carefully kept for many years by a collector. It is literally in like-new condition, with virtually no signs of use.
The black-barrel Biogon C shows no paint loss even on the knurled helicoid ring or around the front edge of the barrel, retaining its deep black finish beautifully. Even the dedicated finder, which is usually very prone to rubbing, still retains its original matte texture, almost as if freshly powder-coated. One has to wonder how many SWC/M cameras survive today in condition this fine.
Fully overhauled by a specialist in September 2026. The winding crank operates crisply with a well-defined, positive feel. The lens and finder were also carefully cleaned and are now beautifully clear and bright.
The light seals in both the body and film magazine have been replaced, providing thorough protection against light leaks.
The glass of the Biogon C 38mm shows no haze or cleaning marks. It is exceptionally clean, clear and bright.
Comes with the original box, instruction manuals in Japanese and English, Hasselblad product catalogue, SWC brochure, strap, 38 hood, lens cap, Polaroid Back 100 with its original box, instruction manual and inspection certificate, and a focusing screen adapter with its original box and instruction manual. Some whitening is visible on the rubber parts of the Polaroid back.
The original box, instruction manuals and Polaroid back show some signs of use.
The focusing screen is an Acute-Matte type, providing a bright view right into the corners. Viewed through a reflex viewfinder, it allows you to enjoy the wonderful scene projected through the Biogon itself.
A very difficult set to find in this exceptional condition.
