Its modern design is hard to believe it dates back more than 60 years. With its refined styling and functionality, it looks perfectly at home even on current Leica digital cameras. Manufactured during the golden age of postwar Leitz production, this lens is also a fine example of superb craftsmanship and finishing.

The Elmar 50mm f2.8 is known for its gentle, slightly soft rendering at or near wide open. Stop it down a little, and it becomes crisp and sharp while retaining a pleasing softness, producing images with a distinctive character.

Unfortunately, most examples of this Elmar f2.8 suffer from stubborn haze that has penetrated the special optical glass and cannot be fully removed. This particular lens, however, is a rare exception, with beautifully clear and bright glass. Although this model was produced in relatively large numbers, finding one with glass this clean is extremely rare.

A precious example that allows you to enjoy the lens's original optical performance.

There is a faint linear scratch on the base of the lens barrel and some minor scuffs, but the overall appearance is very clean. The collapsible section also shows relatively little wear. A fine example of the high manufacturing quality of Leitz's golden age.

Fully overhauled in October 2026, including focus adjustment. Both the aperture and helicoid rings operate very smoothly. Particular care has been taken to adjust the feel of the infinity lock engaging and the torque of the collapsible barrel lock, making the lens a pleasure to use.

The glass is free from noticeable scratches or haze. An Elmar 50mm f2.8 with such clear and bright glass is a rare find.
